Bush Border Philosophy Prompts Change in Secret Service Procedures
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Disassociated Press) June 9, 2006 – Arlo P. Smothers, Head of the Presidential Services Division of the United States Secret Service, announced today that there would be a dramatic shift in Secret Service policy regarding protection of the President.
The change was in response to a news conference earlier this week in which the President discussed border security policy. During that discussion with the press, the President stated “we’re not going to be able to secure the border until people believe that they don’t have to sneak over it.”
“I thought we had been doing a good job,” stated Smothers, “but, apparently – we’ve been doing it all wrong. If you follow the President’s line of thinking, we’re not going to be able to fully protect the President until people believe they have relatively free and easy access to him.”
Smothers unveiled the new plans that include, going forward, the President traveling on commercial airlines, rather than Air Force One, with a single valet attendant, and taking taxis or public transit for ground transportation. The gates around the White House will be taken down, all doors will be left unlocked, and people seeking to see the President will simply walk into the West Wing and make an appointment with the President’s secretary just outside of the Oval Office door.
Smothers insisted that the shift “will take some getting used to, but will be worth it – we owe it to the President to make him at least as secure as he would make the border.”
