Fred Willard Hosts Gubernatorial Inauguration
SACRAMENTO (Disassociated Press) November 18, 2003 - Goofball actor Fred Willard, best known for his roll as goof-ball co-host Jerry Hubbard on the late night talk show spoof “Fernwood Tonight,” which later became “America Tonight” from the ‘70’s, acted as the Master of Ceremonies for the Inauguration of new California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday.
“I asked Fred to host the ceremonies because he truly symbolizes the dream of California,” Governor Schwarzenegger explained after the ceremony. “I mean, when you think about it, I had the looks, the body, the brains – everything you need to make it big in show biz – and Fred had none of these things. When you think about it, Fred went much further in the show business with what he had than I ever did.”
Willard opened the ceremony in true fashion, making pin-headed jokes about the Sacramento Kings basketball team and a local minor baseball team. He closed the ceremony with an equally dim-witted comment about the Venice Beach body building lobby. All of these comments were greeted with groans and sneers from the audience.
When asked what was next in his future, Willard responded, “Arnold has inspired me. I think I’ll go back to Fernwood, and run for Mayor.”
