Homeless Following Trump’s Lead
HOLLYWOOD (Disassociated Press) – March 28, 2004 – Ted Minton, who feeds himself by panhandling in front of the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, showed some entrepreneurial initiative in the spirit of Donald Trump last week. Just as Trump recently applied to trademark the common phrase “you’re fired,” which he uses in his reality television show The Apprentice, Minton has applied to trademark the phrase “spare some change?”
“The way I see it, once I get this trademarked, anyone else who profits by saying ‘spare some change?’ is going to have to pay me a royalty,” Minton stated. Bob Salmons, a panhandling friend of Minton’s who cleans peoples’ windows for tips at a 7-11 in nearby Studio City, has taken a cue from his friend and has filed to trademark ‘clean your windows?’
Both Minton and Salmons have high aspirations for their trademarks. “If they ever make a reality television show about street people, we figure we’re gonna score big,” said Salmons.
