New 'Atkins' Categories a Hit at Nathan's Annual July 4th Contest

CONEY ISLAND (Disassociated Press) July  5, 2009 – While fans here cheered as American Joey Chestnut for the third consecutive year brought home the title of "Most Patriotic American" by virtue of again defeating Takero Kobayashi in what has become an annual and iconic battle for the ages in the Nathan's 4th of July Hot Eating Contest, more health conscious fans also appreciated and saluted the introduction of three new hot dog eating categories.

"The new low carb, low starch thing is taking hold everywhere you look," stated Nathan's spokesperson Seth Gumbridge.  "While we'll almost surely always have the main contest including the traditional, dog and bun event, we are adapting to the times, with the inclusion of these new contest categories."

Three "bunless" events were introduced this year, in additional to the traditional, main event, which was as usual aired live to fans across the globe on ESPN - the Nathan's Traditional Bunless Dog Contest, in addition to the Nathan's Bunless Turkey Hot Dog and the Nathan's 97% Fat Free Kosher Hot Dog, modeled after the popular Hebrew National brand hot dog of the same type. contests. The winners were Gord Gitation, Phil N. Swallow, and Shuval Kramdownowitz, in that order.

"I'm glad to see these professional eaters paying more to healthful alternatives," observed Brooklyn local and long time event fan Sadie Goldstein, of the Crown Heights neighborhood.
