Obama Sparks Military Controversy in First Day as President
WASHINGTON (Disassociated Press) January 21, 2009 – While most of the Nation's Capitol and the Nation itself viewed the Inauguration of Barck Obama with awe and wonder, the new President's continuous critics found fault in some of his first phrases.
"He claimed that he was going to try and be a unifier, so why bring up such a divisive subject within the first few hours of his Presidency?" queried outspoken critic Sean Hannity.
Hannity was referring to a trans-oceanic address Obama made to the Illinois Army National Guard 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Unit via the Internet, that was telecast across the globe. During the address, the President was dismayed that the overwhelming majority of the service people were fans of the Chicago Cubs. Obama himself is well known for his support of the South Side Chicago White Sox.
"Chicago baseball fans are different than fans in any other two team markets in the country," explained Rush Limbaugh. "While fans in the two team markets of Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York, and the Greater Beltway co-exist peacefully, Chicago fans loath the Chicago team they don't root for, and the fans of that team as well."
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley tempered the reaction. "On a day like today, even Chicago baseball fans can put aside their differences, and begin looking to the future," the Mayor stated.
