Professional Athletes' Poll: "It's Not Lying When it's Katie"
NEW YORK (Disassociated Press) February 14, 2009 – In the aftermath of the Alex Rodriguez steroid scandal, a Disassociated Press poll of professional athletes, ranging across major sports including baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, boxing, motocross and auto racing reveals that an overwhelming majority of professional athletes, both in the United States and around the world, don't consider the New York Yankee slugger to having lied in an interview with CBS anchor Katie Couric on 60 Minutes just over a year ago, when he told her he had never used steroids during his baseball career.
Earlier this month, Rodriguez confirmed, in an ESPN interview with Peter Gammons, reports that he tested positive for steroids during the 2003 season, a year in which Rodriguez was named the American League's Most Valuable Player. At that time, Rodriguez was playing baseball for the Texas Rangers.
"Katie Couric isn't a sports journalist," was the opinion of Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant, last season's MVP in the National Basketball Association. "It really doesn't count, when you say something that's not true to her."
"She's not even really a journalist at all," stated two time Super Bowl MVP and former NFL regular season MVP Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots. "Lying to her is like lying to your wife or your girlfriend."
NHL All-Star Chris Chelios of the Detroit Red Wings summed up the sentiment of most: "Nobody is particularly concerned when someone lies to Katie Couric. On the other hand, I'm sure everybody would like to join me in wishing her a happy Valentine's Day."
