Time Warner Re-Classifies Entire Fox News Network as Infomercial

LITTLETON, CO (Disassociated Press) – April 25, 2007 – Time Warner Cable announced today that it would be re-classifying the entire Fox News Network from it’s current programming designation on the Time Warner Program Guide from a “News and Information” network to an “Infomercial” network.

“They spend so much time on every programming segment now just promoting American Idol (the popular karaoke competition shown on Fox’s affiliate broadcast network) that we felt the re-classification was in order,” stated Time Warner Programming Designation Spokesperson Seth Gumbridge.

This is the second major re-classification for Fox by Time Warner recently; last fall, the giant cable television operator re-classified the popular The O’Reilly Factor to “Infomercial” from its previous “Public Affairs” designation (see Time Warner Re-Classifies 'The O'Reilly Factor' as 'Infomercial,' The Disassociated Press, October 11, 2006).

The re-classification was met by criticism from executives at Fox, who labeled the re-classification as just another act of “brinksmanship” in the ongoing public feud between the Fox News Network and CNN (a sister corporation to Time Warner Cable), its major competitor, and their parent companies News Corporation and Time Warner, Inc.  Gumbridge, however, described the re-classification as “reasonable and fair” – “and beside,” he concluded, “my teenage daughter hasn’t come out of her bedroom since Sanjaya got booted off the show.”
