University of Michigan Passes Resolution of Gratitude to New York Mets, USC

ANN ARBOR (Disassociated Press) October 9, 2007 – The Regents of the University of Michigan have passed a Resolution of Gratitude to the New York Mets of Major League Baseball and the University of Southern California Trojans football team.

Michigan, which had found itself on the verge of having to close in the aftermath of a football loss early last month to Appalachian State, ostensibly a ‘little league’ football team (see University of Michigan to Close after School Year The Disassociated Press, September 6, 2007now has been granted clemency in its embarrassment by both the Mets and the Trojans, who each have suffered arguably greater sports calamities than even Michigan’s.

At the end of the 2007 baseball season, the Mets, who had lead the National League’s Eastern Division for virtually the entire, blew a 7 game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies with 17 games left, and failed to qualify for the post season.  It was the biggest collapse in major league history.

The Trojans, meanwhile, College Football’s top ranked team at the start of season, suffered a home loss to lowly Stanford as a more than 40 point favorite amongst odds makers going into the game.  Most experts immediately dubbed USC’s loss as being ‘bigger than Appalachian State.’

"Because of the redemption brought to us by both the Mets and the Trojans, these hallowed halls will remain open, and the University can continue to be the beacon of knowledge and learning it has long been," exclaimed University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman.
